A growing number of people are\nreducing their emissions by going electric, which also means that more charging\npoints are popping up on our streets, petrol stations and in other locations.\nBut what about charging your electric car at home? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you purchase your new car,\nit\u2019s very important to do your research and put plans in place for charging it\nat home. In this guide, you\u2019ll find out what equipment you need and what you\u2019ll\nneed to do to charge your new electric vehicle from your very own driveway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can you charge an electric car at home? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As long as your house has an\nelectricity connection, you should have no problems charging your electric\nvehicle. You can park it on your driveway or in the garage and connect the car\nup to a home charging point &#8211; which charges much faster and is far safer to use\nthan a standard 3-pin plug. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"616\" height=\"407\" src=\"https:\/\/leasecar.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/electric-charge.png\" alt=\"man charging electric car at home\" class=\"wp-image-253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/leasecar.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/electric-charge.png 616w, https:\/\/leasecar.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/electric-charge-250x165.png 250w, https:\/\/leasecar.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/electric-charge-120x79.png 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to charge an electric car at home<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing to do before you\nbuy or <a href=\"https:\/\/leasecar.uk\/car-leasing-guide\/who-can-lease-a-car\/\">lease an electric car<\/a> is to work\nout how you\u2019ll charge it. It\u2019s recommended to use a proper home charging point.\nMany <a href=\"https:\/\/quote.scottishpower.co.uk\/electric-vehicles?cc=BJ4V\">energy providers <\/a>will have full\nkits you can install for home electric vehicle (EV) charging. These charging\npoints are compact and fast, so your car will always be fully charged up\nwhenever you need to use it. Some can even be controlled and monitored by apps.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charging points also tend to be\nweatherproof and designed for prolonged use, which standard 3-pin plugs aren\u2019t\n(although such a plug can be used as a short-term measure or last resort). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you get a home charging point,\nwith an energy provider for example, installation will sometimes be included in\nthe cost. It\u2019s always recommended to use a properly qualified installer, who\nwill safely and expertly connect your new charging point to the mains supply\nand make sure it\u2019s 100% safe to use. Crucially, your installer will check the\nwiring in your home to make sure it can handle the extra load. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to choose the right\nlocation for your EV charging point, ensuring easy access when it\u2019s time to\ncharge up. For example, at the front of your property for access from the\ndriveway, or in the garage. You\u2019ll need to choose the right type of connector\nfor your car too &#8211; Type 1 or Type 2. This should be made clear in your vehicle\nhandbook, but you can always ask for advice from the <a href=\"https:\/\/leasecar.uk\/electric-car-leasing-deals\/\">car leasing<\/a> provider or dealer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are of course costs involved\nwith getting a home charging point fitted, but you can reduce this expense with\nthe help of a government grant. There is currently an Office for Low Emission\nVehicles (OLEV) grant which can pay for 75% of the cost of installing a home\ncharging point. You\u2019ll need to use an OLEV approved supplier and the grant is\ncapped at \u00a3500 for one supply point. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once your charging point is fitted\nand ready to use, all you have to do is hop out of the car and plug it in. Your\ncar will charge up until the battery is at full capacity, ready for your next\ndrive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How do you charge an electric car at home?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many ways, charging up your\nelectric vehicle is very similar to charging a mobile phone. You\u2019ll simply need\nto attach the connector from the home charging point to the appropriate plugin\npoint on the car, and wait for the battery to recharge. Many people prefer to\nleave their vehicle charging overnight, although you may not necessarily need\nto charge up your car every day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can take as little as 30 minutes\nor as long as 12 hours <a href=\"https:\/\/leasecar.uk\/blog\/how-long-does-an-electric-car-take-to-charge\/\">to charge an electric car<\/a>,\ndepending on the speed of the charging point or the size of the battery. With\nthis in mind, it can be a good idea to plug in your vehicle as soon as you get\nhome &#8211; or whenever it\u2019s not in use &#8211; so that it\u2019s always got enough power\nshould you need to make an unexpected journey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can you charge an electric car with solar panels?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news for those who have\nsolar panels at home is that it is possible to charge an electric car using the\nenergy these photovoltaic (PV) panels generate. You will need to have a little\nextra equipment however. For example, you\u2019ll need a PV inverter unit to convert\nthe solar energy into a DC current which can be fed through your home EV\ncharging point. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be expensive for the most\nadvanced systems, especially if you don\u2019t already have solar panels but intend\nto buy them.
