Here at Leasecar, we are big fans of the James Bond films. Aside \nfrom the incredible action scenes, the series features some of the most \niconic cars ever made. After an inconclusive debate in the office over \nwhich of these cars is best, we decided to create a definitive ranking \nof James Bond\u2019s most famous cars from best to worst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We have taken the five cars owned by 007 in the top 10 IMDB-rated \nBond films and looked into their original price, increase in value, top \nspeed, acceleration, horse power and fuel efficiency to establish, once \nand for all, which is the best Bond car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1. The Aston Martin DB5 (1964)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Total score: 21<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
The DB5 is indisputably the most recognisable of James Bond\u2019s cars. Featuring in seven films with major roles in Goldfinger<\/em>, Thunderball<\/em> and Goldeneye, <\/em>our research shows that there is good reason for Bond\u2019s preference for the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With an increase in value of 13768%, the DB5\u2019s price has shot up from\n \u00a34,175 in 1964 to \u00a3579,000 today. This puts it at the top of our rating\n for increase in value \u2013 probably in part due to its fame as 007\u2019s car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite its age, the DB5\u2019s specifications and performance remain \nimpressive even by today\u2019s standards – with a top speed of 149mph, 0 to \n60 acceleration in just 6.8 seconds and 282 brake horsepower. Its only \nweakness is its fuel efficiency, achieving just 16.6 miles per gallon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2. The Aston Martin DBS V12 (2007)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Total score: 19<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Number two on our list is another of Bond\u2019s famous Astons. The DBS V12 features in Casino Royale<\/em> as the car driven by Daniel Craig\u2019s Bond in a memorable car chase scene \u2013 ending in destruction for the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Being the newest car on this list, it is perhaps not surprising that \nit the DBS V12 tops rankings for specs and performance. A top speed of \n191 mph, 0 to 60 in 4.2 seconds and 510 brake horsepower make the DBS \nV12 the most powerful vehicle in our rundown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The car is held back from the top position, however, on price \ncomparison points, after ranking bottom for both original price and \nincrease in value. The DBS started off costly, with a basic model \nsetting a buyer back \u00a3180,812 in 2007 (\u00a3238,412 when adjusted for \ninflation) but it has failed to carry this value into the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The DBS V12 is the only car in this line up to have depreciated in \nvalue, with a 32% loss on the original cost price being seen in the \ncurrent market. As the car ages and passes into the \u2018classic car\u2019 \ncategory this value could shoot back up in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fuel efficiency seems to have remained an issue for Aston Martin over\n the last half a century, as little improvement has been seen between \nthe DB5 and the DBS V12. The DBS gets under 2 miles more to the gallon \nthan its 1964 counterpart \u2013 with a total mpg of 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Lotus Esprit S1 will be familiar to most fans as Bond\u2019s submarine car. Featuring in The Spy Who Loved Me<\/em>,\n 007\u2019s Esprit is better known as \u2018Wet Nellie\u2019 and transformed into a \nsubmarine as it plunged into the Sardinian Sea to escape metal-toothed \nhenchman, Jaws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sitting in the middle of our top five Bond cars, the Esprit gains \npoints on price, coming in at the second cheapest car in the top five \nwith an original price (when adjusted for inflation) of \u00a346,545.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Lotus is in the middle of the field for performance specs, with a\n top speed of 135 miles per hours and a 0 to 60 time of 8.4 seconds. As \nwith the Aston Martins, the Lotus\u2019 fuel consumption is not great – the \nEsprit manages just 19 mpg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A submarine in the shape of the Esprit was built for The Spy Who Loved Me<\/em>\n and was lost after filming was completed. It was found in 1989 in a \nstorage locker and was recently sold at auction for \u00a3616,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Esprit actually tied on points with the Sunbeam Alpine, but we awarded it third place owing to its better performance stats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4. The Sunbeam Alpine Series II (1962)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Total score: 18<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
The last two cars on our list have slightly smaller roles in the \nfilms but set 007 apart as a classic car icon. The Sunbeam Alpine is the\n first of Bond\u2019s cars to feature on the big screen \u2013 appearing in 1962\u2019s\n Dr No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Major strengths of the Sunbeam relate to original price, which was \njust \u00a3970 (\u00a319,303 when adjusted for inflation). The car is also the \nmost efficient on this list, achieving 28 mpg, putting it well ahead of \nthe much newer Aston Martin DBS V12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Performance stats let the Alpine down. With a top speed of just 98 \nmph and a 0 to 60 time of 14.5 seconds it lags well behind the top three\n and would have been little help if 007 had ever been needed a swift \ngetaway whilst driving it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
5. The Bentley Mark IV Coup\u00e9 (1935)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
The Bentley Mark IV features briefly in From Russia with Love<\/em>,\n released in 1963. The Mark IV was already recognised as a classic car \nwhen the film was released, having been around since 1935.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Being the oldest car on this list, and from one of Britain\u2019s most \nexpensive car manufacturers, it is perhaps not surprising that the \nBentley brings up the rear of this list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even at its release the car was costly, setting buyers back \u00a31,500 \u2013 \nthe equivalent of \u00a3101,380 today. At over three-quarters of a century \nold the Bentley doesn\u2019t stack up well against some of the other cars in \nterms of performance. A top speed of 90mph and acceleration of 0 to 60 \nspeed of 15 seconds make it the slowest here \u2013 although it\u2019s worth \nnoting that it isn\u2019t falling too far behind the 27-years younger Sunbeam\n Alpine in this area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The strengths of the Bentley lie in the increase in value it has seen\n over its life time. The car today is worth 7933% more than it was when \ndriven out of the showroom in 1935. Surprisingly, the Bentley also \nscores well for fuel efficiency (at least amongst these cars), achieving\n 23 mpg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How We Did It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
We started our research by finding Bond\u2019s five most iconic cars, \nwhich are those appearing in the top 10 James Bond films as rated by \nIMDB. Once we had our short list of vehicles we came up with data points\n that could be relied upon to give an accurate image of the cars\u2019 value \nand performance. After scoping was carried out these were decided as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research was carried out to find these data points which were pulled \ntogether from a number of sources, including manufacturers pages and car\n sites (a full list of source sites is available).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once all data was gathered, each car was given a score for each data \npoint from one to five. Five was awarded to the best performing car in \nthe area, and one to the worst.
