To help you out, we\u2019ve put together a \nlist of the best small cars for fuel economy, and some tips for keeping \nfuel bills down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Best Cars for Fuel Economy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Kia Rio 1.1l<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fuel consumption: 88.3mpg<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/leasecar.uk\/car-leasing\/kia\/rio-hatchback\/\">nifty little car<\/a>\n has swung in top for fuel efficiency amongst not just the small cars \nfound in our research, but all cars available in the UK. &nbsp;An impressive \nmiles per gallon figure of 88.3mpg means your fuel costs will work out \nat just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.speedlimit.org.uk\/petrolprices.html\">6p a mile<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kia Rio is great for young families as it offers a lot of space \nfor a small car. City-based drivers will be best suited to this vehicle \nas its engine size of 1.25L might mean a slower speed over long \ndistances on the motorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The SMART Cabrio<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fuel consumption: 85.6mpg<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the smallest cars on the market today, it is not surprising that the <a href=\"https:\/\/leasecar.uk\/car-leasing\/smart\/fortwo-cabrio-convertible\/\">Cabrio<\/a> has made the top five for fuel economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Released in 2016, the car is perfect for singles or couples with its \ntwo-seater set up. Built for the city, its small size and \nmanoeuvrability mean it is great for getting through narrow streets and \nsqueezing into parking spaces other vehicles would not manage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The VolksWagen Polo 1.2l<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fuel consumption: 83.1mpg<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Volkswagen has earnt a reputation for high quality small cars through its <a href=\"https:\/\/leasecar.uk\/car-leasing\/volkswagen\/polo-hatchback\/\">Polo<\/a>\n and Golf ranges, and the Polo doesn\u2019t let itself down on fuel \nefficiency \u2013 getting up to 83.1mpg. Although the car has a 1.2L engine, \nits engineering makes the most of this power, so it doesn\u2019t feel out of \nits depth even on longer drives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In line with Volkswagen\u2019s reputation, the Polo offers a comfortable \nride with a lot of extras on offer to tailor your vehicle to exactly \nwhat you want. The Polo is great for someone who wants a bit more \ncomfort from their small car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 ecoFLEX<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fuel consumption: 80.7mpg<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/leasecar.uk\/car-leasing\/vauxhall\/corsa-hatchback\/\">Corsa<\/a>\n has been a stalwart of the small car industry for many years now, and \nwith great performance on fuel efficiency it seems likely to be around \nfor a while longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as offering good miles per gallon, the Corsa is surprisingly \nspacious for a small car \u2013 making it another great option as a family \ncar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Mini Hatchback<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fuel consumption: 74.3mpg<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After its reinvention by the BMW Group in 2000, the <a href=\"https:\/\/leasecar.uk\/car-leasing\/mini\/hatchback-hatchback\/\">Mini<\/a> has certainly grown in size. Despite the physical expansion, it still performs excellently on fuel efficiency with 74.3mpg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you would expect from the BMW Group, the Mini Hatchback offers \ncomfort and luxury to rival the VW Polo. The car is much bigger than its\n original ancestor, meaning it is no longer just a useful car to nip \nabout in as a single person, but can easily continue as a great vehicle \nfor numerous people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">tips for Keeping your Fuel bills down<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a car with great fuel economy makes it much easier to limit \nyour fuel bills, but there are still things you can do maximise \nefficiency:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Less weight: <\/strong>the weight of your car and what it is \ncarrying can have a significant impact on its fuel economy performance. \nTo get the best from your car, don\u2019t carry heavy items unless you need \nto. Clear out the boot of your car to save \u00a3s on your fuel bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Maintain your car: <\/strong>A lot of easy-to-fix maintenance \nissues will knock your mpg down. Regularly check your tyre pressure, \ntread and oil levels to keep your vehicle running at its best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Change gear early: <\/strong>Don\u2019t wait until your revs are \nmaxed out to change up the gears. Accelerate at a slightly slower rate \nand move up your gears earlier to make the most of your fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stick to lower speeds: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatcar.com\/truempg\/fuel-tips\">Research<\/a>\n has shown that travelling at 80mph uses up to 25% more fuel than \ndriving at 70. Stick to speed limits at all times for safety and fuel \nefficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Get gravity on your side: <\/strong>When you are travelling in\n an area with obstacles or that\u2019s downhill don\u2019t speed up only to have \nto brake again shortly after, wasting valuable fuel in the process. Use \ngravity and your car\u2019s momentum to keep going where possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How we Worked Out the Best Cars<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To establish the miles per gallon of each car, we used data from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fuelmileage.co.uk\/list-manufacturers\/SMART\/fortwo-cabrio\/fortwo-cabrio-54-bhp-cdi-with-Softip-and-15-inch-rear-wheels-Automatic(5-AMT)\">fuelmileage.co.uk<\/a>. This site allowed us to search through and compare the fuel efficiency of all small car models currently available in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fuelmileage\u2019s information is based on manufacturers\u2019 specifications, \nas these are the most consistent data points across the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For each car we looked at, we found the data for the simplest model \navailable, with the smallest engine size. All cars are three-door models\n unless stated otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once we had a list of mpg for each of the small cars, this \ninformation was entered into an excel spreadsheet and ranked highest to \nlowest.
