{"id":588,"date":"2020-11-18T15:18:35","date_gmt":"2020-11-18T15:18:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leasecar.uk\/blog\/?p=588"},"modified":"2024-09-18T11:40:37","modified_gmt":"2024-09-18T10:40:37","slug":"eight-caravan-towing-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leasecar.uk\/blog\/eight-caravan-towing-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Eight caravan towing tips"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With the Caravan and Motorhome Club opening their sites from the 4<sup>th<\/sup> of July and summer holidays abroad looking less likely it\u2019s expected Brits will be enjoying stay-cations this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Motoring experts <a href=\"https:\/\/leasecar.uk\/\">LeaseCar.uk<\/a> have revealed eightcaravan towing tips to ensure new van-owners, and old, stay safe and legal when on UK roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advice includes ensuring all safety equipment is correctly fitted before setting off, such as extended mirrors and correct registration plates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being aware of other road users and pulling over when safe will help stop any aggressive driving behaviour shown towards you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson from <a href=\"https:\/\/leasecar.uk\/\">LeaseCar.uk<\/a> said: \u201cMany people think that towing a caravan or trailer just means connecting it to the car and setting off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever seasoned caravan owners know that the holiday doesn\u2019t start until you\u2019ve made it to your destination safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBrits need to adapt their driving style to ensure they keep themselves and other road users safe when towing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are <a href=\"https:\/\/leasecar.uk\/\">LeaseCar.uk<\/a>\u2019s towing tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Speed limits<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Cars towing caravans or trailer have a top speed limit of 10mph less than the normal limit. Their top speed is 50mph on single carriageways and 60mph on dual carriageways and motorways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tow Bar<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several different types of tow bars available on the market. Ensure that the one you use is approved for your vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>License<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensure you hold the right towing license to keep yourself out of trouble. If you passed your test before 1997 you can tow a caravan or trailer up to a combined weight of 8,250kg. If you passed in or after 1997, you can tow a trailer weighing up to 750kg with a combined weight of up to 3500kg. If you plan to tow anything heavier you\u2019ll need to take a towing test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Extended mirrors<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re towing it means that you can\u2019t see behind you with your regular wingmirrors. A pair of extended wingmirrors should be purchased and attached before you start your journey. These will help avoid potential danger and a fine or points on your driving licence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t overload<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The gross train weight of a vehicle, which can often be found on the vehicle identification number under the bonnet or inside the driver\u2019s door, is the weight of a loaded car and loaded trailer put together and must not be exceeded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Display your plates<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The registration plates displayed on both your car and caravan must match up and have the same standards. They should have readable fonts and be lit when travelling at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pull over<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If due to your slower driving, you have a large amount of traffic starting to queue up behind you, when you find a safe space pull over and let them pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Snaking<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it can be tempting to break when you feel your caravan starting to sway or affect the stability of the car, this should be avoided.
