About the Kia Sportage

Cartoon guy pointing left

The Kia Sportage and its history

Kia began making the popular Sportage SUV in 1993 in South Korea. The first models did extremely well in the Asian market. It didn't take long for Kia to start building the Sportage in Germany and breaking into the European SUV market - and that made quite a splash.

Although the Sportage started off as a mini SUV, later models became bigger. In 2004, it got a massive safety makeover. 2010 saw the release of the third-generation models with bigger engines, which were manufactured until around 2015.

Onwards, and the Sportage gets even bigger and safer. Another change was the better traction, FWD and AWD editions. The Sportage has always been about versatility and practicality.

Kia has a great reputation for really listening to what drivers want and putting in the groundwork to produce innovative solutions to any problems. Drivers wanted more space, they wanted safer cars - and Kia delivered on both fronts.

Fast forward to 2023 and the range is low on emissions and massive on choice. You can choose to lease a Kia Sportage with one of four different powertrain options: Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid, Mild Hybrid and Fully Electric.

The Kia Sportage - A stylish choice?

On the outside the Kia Sportage is a car that stands out. It doesn't have to shout 'look at me' though. It's stylish and draws attention without making a fuss thanks to a stunning array of bold creases, cat-like angles and unique styling features.

It's got enormous road presence and it's a car you're not going to lose in a car park - even if just because of its size! Boomerang-shaped LED headlights and a massive, imposing grille provide aggressive styling up front, while more eye-catching LEDs make the rear no less impressive.

We think that an SUV of this size should be chunky all around: you want something that looks its weight on the road. The Kia Sportage has chunk by the acres. It's unapologetically stylish and manages to pull off the 'sleek but bold' look effortlessly. This car's aesthetic character is certainly a big plus point.

On the inside, slide inside the cabin of the Kia Sportage and the feeling is calm and almost subdued compared to the aggressive exterior. Soft touch fabrics and metallic details draw the eye and everything feels balanced and well thought out. Although that feeling of luxury is definitely there, it's not brash and it's easy on the eye. The quality of the interior is noticeable. It's all very solid and clearly designed for the top end of the market.

Infotainment

The chunky dashboard provides two big, easy-to-read screens for infotainment and driver's display. Kia makes things straightforward here; you probably won't even need to read the manual to work out how to use them or customise the settings to suit your preferences.

Available space

If you and the family like plenty of space, the Sportage will tick that box. Even for taller drivers, there is plenty of leg and headroom. A full range of adjustments to the driving seat and the steering wheel make finding that perfect position even easier. Additionally, those heated seats will make things feel nice and cosy in the winter months.

In the rear seats, your kids won't feel cooped up either. Even adults will find enough knee and headroom. There are cubby holes, cup-holders and storage areas scattered liberally around. That means keeping mess to a minimum on longer journeys and no tantrums caused by misplaced smartphones!

If you've got younger children, you'll find the rear doors a bonus. They open really wide, which makes it easier to get child seats in and out of the back or coax unruly toddlers in.

In addition to the space available for passengers, there's an impressive amount of boot space - up to 591 litres depending on the model you choose. With that amount of space, you'll never have to ponder about what to pack and what to leave behind on family weekends away, and there's even room for the dog to come along too.

Is the Kia Sportage a luxury SUV?

Older Sportage models were always good cars. They were versatile and performed well. They offered a lot and they ticked a lot of boxes, but luxury wasn't really a consideration. However, as we've mentioned before, Kia is a manufacturer that listens to its customers and they clearly said more luxury was required! The new Sportage models have stylish touches that have moved them into a new genre.

Who should consider leasing a Kia Sportage?

The Sportage is a car that really deserves its reputation for versatility. It's got the space to take you and your family around the country, or further afield, on holiday.

It's got the kind of performance that takes the chore out of driving and adds some spice to the tarmac. The fuel-efficiency and economy also makes it a great choice for city driving or commuting, with a choice of powertrain set ups to suit your situation and driving style.

Choosing the right Sportage model for you

So, you think that a Sportage lease might be right for you? That's great news, but you still have plenty of decisions to make.

Consider your priorities. If it's cost, you should start by looking at the lower-spec Sportage models. If it's efficiency, begin your research with the most economical models. There are petrol models, diesel models, turbocharged models, 4th generation models, 5 dr autos, affordable models and even a 2.0-litre diesel 4WD version if you need a real workhorse.

Determining which model, based on contract hire details, is right for you is an important step. But, we're here to help you decide.

The petrol or diesel engines can be teamed with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed automatic. The hybrids are available as automatic only.

The hybrid model has lots of grunt when it comes to nipping around traffic and cruising the open road. Although slightly pricier, the plug-in hybrid can do around 40 miles on electric power only - that's great for your pocket and the planet too.

Let's have a look at the basic powertrain models and engine options for your Kia Sportage lease:

Performance on different roads

A Kia Sportage offers solid performance on all road surfaces, including some serious off-road tracks.

Town driving

The hybrid Sportage is a great choice for city driving and can reach speeds of up to 40mph before the petrol engine kicks in - that means savings at the pumps.

It also has town-style steering, which is responsive and light - ideal for weaving around traffic and tackling narrow streets. The suspension is firm but not so firm that it can't handle speed bumps with ease and glide over all but the worst potholes.

Country driving

The big boot size means that the Sportage is a car for getting out and about in. And it's pretty nifty on country roads too, so no need to stick to the urban jungle.

It has good grip and suspension that's firm enough to eliminate a lot of the expected body roll on twisty roads.

Slip the Sportage into Sport mode for more responsive acceleration and added weight on the steering - both features that make rural driving easier and stress-free.

Motorway driving

The diesel model is a great choice if you're putting in a lot of motorway miles, but even the hybrids handle this kind of travel well. The standard hybrid has plenty of acceleration and the plug-in even more.

All models have enjoyed a noise reduction makeover, so the miles will slip by in virtual silence - just what you need to arrive at the office in a zen-like state of calm!

Safety and driver assist features

As expected, Kia has given the safety of its drivers a lot of consideration. The Sportage is full to the brim with innovative tech to keep you and your passengers safe from harm.

As standard, you get forward-collision avoidance assistance with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-following steering, an intelligent speed limiter, a tyre pressure monitor and trailer stability assistance for towing. Of course, you can add further options to that line up with blind-spot cameras, a parking collision avoidance system, and a remote parking assistant (depending on model) also available.

The Kia Sportage scored a reassuring full five stars in Euro NCAP safety tests. This includes an 87% rating for adult occupant protection and an 86% score for child occupant protection. These figures are impressive and should provide peace of mind for family drivers.
